Aquarium Maintenance
A good Aquarium Maintenance regime is vital to keeping your Aquarium healthy and your Fish happy. A typical, and simple, Aquarium Maintenance schedule is as follows:
1. Aquarium Glass Cleaning - every 3 days
Algae often builds up on Aquarium Glass making the appearance of your Aquarium unsightly. You will never prevent Algae build up as this occurs due to light. Aquarium Algae is very easy to remove using a combination of Aquarium Cleaning Tools.
Fish-Fish-Fish recommend Tetra Aquarium Glass Scraper.
2. Aquarium Gravel Cleaning - every 2 weeks
Fish Waste will naturally build up on the bottom of your Aquarium. It is very important to clean Aquarium Gravel to remove the Fish Waste that has settled. Aquarium or Fish Tank Gravel Cleaners make this job very simple.
Fish-Fish-Fish recommend Rena Telescopic Vacuum Cleaner.
The way Aquarium Gravel Cleaners work is by siphoning the water from your Aquarium (into a bucket) and as this is happens you push the end of the cleaner into the Aquarium Gravel which in turn cleans it!
Make sure you don’t remove to much Aquarium Water - 20% is about right (see below)
3. Aquarium Water Change - every 2 weeks
Changing Aquarium Water is best done at the same time as cleaning the Aquarium Gravel (see above). It is very important to undertake regular water changes to dilute the nitrate.
Put some Fresh Cold Water (Tap Water) in a big container to the volume of 20% of your Aquarium. You will need to add some Tap Water Conditioner to remove the Chlorine from the Tap Water then leave to stand for a few hours. When you have done this top up your Aquarium with the water from the container.
Fish-Fish-Fish recommend API Aquarium Stress Coat as a Tap Water Conditioner.
4. Aquarium Filter Cleaning - every 3 weeks
Take the Filter Media from your Aquarium Filter. You will notice there are variable grades of Filter Sponge and some Filter Ceramic or plastic Biological Media.
The Aquarium Filter Foam or Filter Sponges should be washed under clean tap water or replaced as required. Fish-Fish-Fish stock a large range of Aquarium Filter Foam, Filter Wadding and Filter Sponges for a large range of well know branded Aquariums.
Aquarium Biological Media MUST NOT be cleaned in tap water. Biological Media from must be cleaned using the Aquarium Water to help keep the beneficial Aquarium Bacteria alive. (This Live Bacteria turns the Fish’s Waste Nitrite into Nitrate. This is very important because Nitrite is poisonous to your Fish where as Nitrate is only dangerous in high levels).
Fish-Fish-Fish stock a range of Aquarium Water Test Kits that help you monitor your Nitrite and Nitrate levels.
